Great Song, Under Rated Band: Poco

What a super song this was, and still is. Basically a song about the joy of being in love, this song has such an incredible uplifting feeling to it, you can't help but instantly like it. A rock song, with some country overtones, and great vocals and harmonies; all classic trademarks of this seriously underrated band.

POCO is the "other" band that evolved out of The Buffalo Springfield, the more famous one being Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Richie Furay and Jim Messina were the Springfield descendants. They quickly added pedal steel genius Rusty Young, and a new country rock sound was born. Timothy B. Schmit joined a bit later to add the final vocal and harmony element to the band. Schmidt would later become a cornerstone of The Eagles.

This song was really the hit single that never was. Commercial, but not compromising, with a great sing-a-long chorus that you want to join the minute your hear it. It also has a great driving rhythm that builds as it progresses to a super finale. Poco had some minor notice earlier, hit wise, but this was the one the record company pushed. The one that should have been. It became a "medium" hit at best, but never achieved the status that the band, and it's fans expected from it. Very sad.

POCO, after several personal changes, did have a couple of major hits about eight years later, which were well earned. But it left the feeling of too little, too late. I personally think they were a bit robbed of their deserved place in music history. Members of the original lineup reunited a few years ago for a small group of shows (see below). I wish I could have caught one of these performances.

This song has it all: great rock beat between bass and drums, super rhythm guitar, Rusty Young kills the pedal steel, Paul Cotton on lead, great vocals and soaring harmonies featuring Richie Furay and Timothy B. Schmit (before he moved on to The Eagles). Give it a listen, and I think you'll discover a lost gem.
