Huge Talent, Great Teacher

Meet Steve Smith, a huge talent and a great teacher. I met Steve through Chris Sanders (upcoming separate post), and like David Kershenbaum, he has helped guide me along this wonderful journey. Steve is also known as the "Time Czar", being absolutely religious about instilling proper timing in my guitar playing. After several centuries, I think we finally got somewhere. As this process grew, we became very good friends, collaborators, and co-songwriters.

One of my favorite songs that we co-wrote is "Just A Chance", the story about people fleeing an impoverished existence for a better place, just seeking a chance to improve their lives. Living in a border area, both of us see this painful scenario on almost a daily basis. It was a song waiting to happen.

Besides being a great guitarist, Steve is a world class mandolin player (shown below, with Anne Luna of the Hard Road Trio), and is a founding member of one of the best Americana/Bluegrass bands in the country, The Hard Road Trio. I was incredibly honored when the band recorded "Just A Chance" on their record "Smoke and Redemption". You can hear this excellent version below.

I always look forward to working with Steve, as he has such keen insight into music, storytelling, and songwriting. In fact we have just started working on some new material, and I am anxious to see where this all goes when we really get into it.
