Meet the genius, David Kershenbaum. David (pictured above), a good friend, is a multi Grammy Award winning producer responsible for over 300 million records sold from such artists as Tracy Chapman, Cat Stevens, Byran Adams, Joe Jackson, Duran Duran, and countless others, the list is huge. And now I'm very proud to add my name to that list of artists that have worked with David.
He took me under his wing and became my mentor about 11 years ago, guiding, advising, and developing me, and I am truly grateful. He taught me what a SONG really is, far more than just music and lyrics assembled under an umbrella. A song has to come from the heart, otherwise it's relatively meaningless.
David forced me to look deep within myself to bring out the emotions and feelings that exist in those darker abandoned places, the places where great songs exist. One particular example of this from my first album is "Shake My Fist At The Sky", a song dealing with the death of my parents. With David's help, that song was carefully crafted so to not only be very personal to me, but also very relatable to anyone who has suffered any kind of loss. This is the essence of great songwriting, to make personal experiences universal.
It goes without saying, but I"ll say it anyway, behind the board producing and mixing, David is a pure genius, with precision ears that no human should be allowed to have. The two of us (pictured below) had a great time over the 8 months of recording, mixing , and producing my first record.
